World peace? Saving the planet? Eternal personal growth for all? Noble goals no doubt. Leave it to some Lone Ranger or a Jedi.
As in any country, in addition to the ordinary
political quibbling about roads, taxes etc., there are all sorts of ideological
tensions around social, ethnic, racial, religious, political and territorial
issues (type I) to be resolved
-within society and sometimes between societies- to begin with. However, time is running out
on type II issues (the “Green Peace” stuff). For a quick and dirty
review, see below; between brackets: estimates for the remaining time to
resolve the issue before really massive problems arise.

The list below is in order of evolutionary decent. The general pattern
is that at all levels the biodiversity is significantly reduced. The
disturbing thing however is that if hypothetically biodiversity (and volume)
at every level is halved, biodiversity in total might be reduced. General monitor points -

Population declines. Studying the population figures of 1300 different
species over a time frame of 1970-2003, researchers reported: -
the numbers of birds, mammals, reptilians and amphibians declined by 30 per cent in 33 years time; -
the declines were: on land by 31%, in sweet water 28% and seas

April 2007 ‘"For example, after
objections form Saudi Arabia and China, the report dropped a sentence stating
that the impact of human activity on the earth's heat budget exceeds that of
the sun by fivefold. "The difference is really a factor of 10". says
lead author Piers Forster (IPCC-report)..."the sun currently contributes
an extra 0.12 watt of energy for each square meter of the earth's surface,
whereas man-made sources trap an additional 1.6 watts per square meter. The document's conservatism also reflects the nature
of climate change science. Various scenario's predict sea-level rise as little
as 18 centimetres (seven inches) or as much as 59 centimetres (23 inches). None of these models, however,
completely includes the potentially greater contributions
to such a rise from the
melting of glaciers in Greenland and Antarctica...". (p16 Scientific American April 2007,
Conservative Climate, consensus document may understate the climate change
problem)
PM Al Gore estimates the Greenland glacier to be good for 6 meters of
sea level rise, like –only- the south
west part of the Antarctic; don’t forget effects of melting permafrost
(Novosibisrkian buildings are already reported to be destabilising); don’t
forget vaporisation (warm air can hold more humidity). |

Environmental pollutions would cost China ± 136 bln dollar to clear up the

No doubt some of these sources are disputed for
whatever reasons etc. etc., and no doubt there are better ones, and no doubt
there are other important vital resources missing etc., and yes selectivity
allows to prove any point etc., all of that is however not the issue; what
remains is that the overall picture is not too bright.
And in addition to that, there will remain a
number of type III issues (the “UNESCO” stuff). These involve the world
wide access to certain assets for all, like education, employment and
intellectual and artistic self expression, if mankind would strive for the
greatest happiness for the greatest numbers.
All in all, this means that it is logical to
assume that mankind will not survive the near future. Perhaps it should settle
for the first 20 years to begin with. Expectations shouldn’t be high though:
mankind hasn’t evolved significantly since the last few hundred millennia or
even the last few million years. It is a primitive species unfortunately; the
main thing it is good at is knocking each others brains out and that sort of
other similar ‘human’ behaviour, since time began figuratively speaking. So it
is illogical to assume that this condition will change within the next few
hundred millennia or within the few million years for that matter.
Nevertheless, the best of luck. In the
meantime, it is an interesting challenge to keep things in one piece.
*) Though there seems to
be enough time, this does not exclude that certain points of safe return,
already have elapsed.
**)Consider
biodiversity as a triangle; the more primitive the more different species and
the largest volumes. Moving upwards in the ‘tree of life’, as species become
more complex, the number of species reduces as does their numbers. If at each
level is –hypothetical– halved, then the surface of the triangle –reflecting
perhaps the resilience of the total system- becomes one forth of the original.
Or, consider this theoretical line of reasoning. If it is normal that 1% of all
flora & and fauna gets extinct each year, discrete and with some exceptions,
there would be an entire new flora and fauna after a century. This it obviously
not the case; replacement in every 100-500 million years is more likely;
meaning extinction rates of 0.000,001-0.000,000,5%! So, it is reasonable to
assume that we are way above those levels.
