In this document you will find lists of Large Scale Facilities (LSF) for science and research;

LSF up to 1998;
LSF 1999-2000;
LSF 2001-2002-2003.

The objective is only to provide a quick scan for interested parties.

The European inventory (up to 1998) asked country specialists/contacts to name their national LSFs, coming up with 116 of them. The full text report is at http://www.cordis.lu/tmr/src/lsf1998.htm . For just a quick scan of the names of the facilities, see Appendix 1.

Lists of press statements of research ministries of a number of countries (covering 1999 and 2000 for the countries investigated) were used for this hand picked inventory. More: Appendix 2.

The lists of press statements of 2001 and 2002 of a dedicated science news site were used for again a hand picked inventory. It will probably have a bias for USA research as many of the most leading science magazines are originating from the USA of Great Britain. More: Appendix 3 covering 2001, 2002, 2003.

Epilogue; a small remark at the end

The value of large, medium and small scale facilities is a direct function of their use: what good are they if not used to their full potential; 24 hours pro day and 365 days each year (minus time for maintenance and repairs)? A physical central database has its pros and cons and internet perhaps ís a (virtual decentralised) LSF database for some. In that case or else in the meantime, webmasters may treat facility information with the same relevance and diligence as press items:

- an overview of the large scale facilities of their organisation;

- an index or schedule for its availability (if it is night at my place, it is daytime at yours; so only remote access & operation is necessary and;

- a reservation & contract system for its operation or use.

An example of a good practice is perhaps the project seti&home. (See Book of bookmarks, look for ‘seti’). It tries to take advantage of all that non-operational computer time of the average computer. Computers are switched of 16 hours each day. During a part of the average working day, its user is a few hours ‘in conference’ or he/she is ‘having a break’ or is simple too slow to take full advantage of an +60Mg Hz multi tasking processor. That means a lot of free computer time for a dedicated researcher, if computer owners are willing to allow access of that computer during that time of none or under usage! It is an opportunity and the SETI operators designed something smart to take advantage of it. (What ‘s yours?)
